HOW AND WHEN TO LIGATE When an individual tooth is so severely malaligned that bracket engagement would cause an undesirable permanent set in the wire or overstress the periodontium, a wire tie may be used through the “horizontal” auxiliary slot. If the malalignment is very pronounced, the ligature may be twisted several times before attaching it to the archwire. The length of this twisted portion depends upon how much deflection of the archwire is desired. In this way, it is possible to more accurately gauge the force applied to the tooth while also providing some protection to the archwire against accidental stresses. 29 Bend ligature end lingually The horizontal auxiliary slot may also be used to ligate teeth together as a unit. Passing the ligature wire through the auxiliary slot and behind the Spring Clip provides for a cosmetic, hygienic tie which will not be disturbed by subsequent archwire changes.
